THIS Institute’s annual event is free and open to all. Register opposite to access all of the sessions outlined in the programme below.

THIS Space aims to:

  • provide a focus for knowledge sharing in healthcare improvement
  • stimulate innovation and fresh thinking
  • help researchers to develop the habits, knowledge, skills, and experiences to support their professional growth
  • connect colleagues from across different disciplines who share a common goal
  • be a means of accelerating the development of the field of the study of healthcare

We welcome researchers, patients, carers, NHS staff and anyone with an interest in the evidence base for improving the quality and safety of healthcare. Yes, patients included!

Burden of treatment and remote care

  • Gurjit Chhokar, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
  • Emma Doble, Patient speaker, The BMJ
  • Lisa Hinton, THIS Institute
  • Frances Mair, University of Glasgow
  • Natasha Patel, Patient speaker
  • Natalie Richards, THIS Institute

The burden of treatment considers the impact of the work of being a patient. For example, in managing their condition patients may need to self-monitor their health or implement lifestyle changes. Some of this work can be difficult, time-consuming and costly. In this session, we will explore how remote care (using telephone or digital methods) affects the burden of treatment. We will also identify priorities for future research to reduce the burden of treatment in remote care.

This session will be followed by an optional breakout room from 13:50-14:10

14:00 - 14:10

Improving the evidence for improving cross-sector working

  • Claire Goodman, University of Hertfordshire
  • Niro Siriwardena, University of Lincoln

Working across multiple sectors is important to quality and safety in the care of patients, but it’s hard to do well. This session will look at the evidence base for cross-sector working, drawing on examples from pre-hospital emergency care and care homes to offer learning.
